A gentle reminder
During the distribution of welfare items and lunch boxes to the elderly today, my partner and I visited an uncle who seemed to live in a relatively new HDB block and unit and from the looks of it, I initially thought I went to the wrong unit as I expected to visit a more run-down flat.
However my partner, Joel, reminded me not to judge based on appearance and when the beneficiary opened the door, we instantly realised that he had difficulties in his movement and seemed to be living alone. I felt really bad for judging based on the appearance of the block and unit and it is a poignant reminder for me that there are Singaporeans all around us, from all walks of life who need our help, who need us to reach out to them and connect with them, especially so during these trying times.
One hope I have for Singapore is for all Singaporeans who need help to receive the consistent support, concern and warmth that they deserve, so that we can be a society whereby everyone can live a decent and healthy life. One thing I’m doing to contribute to this hope of mine is to willingly take on any kinds of opportunities and volunteer activities that I encounter so that even if it’s just a one-time off event, meeting the beneficiaries for one time, at least I can be a small part that links the past and future community efforts to reach these beneficiaries.
