Progress equals happiness

Before we started on this project, I remember I wanted to learn more about the lifestyles of the elderly and how technology can help them improve their quality of living. I did understand a bit more. Because Auntie K.E. cannot read or write, I realised that her usage of a lot of apps depends on how many steps are needed to use the app. Too many steps that require reading means that she cannot understand what to do next and it is hard for her to just memorize. The voice search function was a lifesaver and allowed her to do some basic searching even if it is not very accurate. I realised that Auntie K.E. was sometimes not confident even if she knew what to do so it was important to give her affirmation and let her know that she can just try and go back if it is not what she wants. I really appreciate the help rendered by the Blossom Seeds staff during our lessons, especially Auntie Ping Ping. She helped to translate the dialect from Auntie K.E. and because she is teaching the elderly how to use the smartphone herself, I learnt a lot of new ideas on how to deliver the content to Auntie K.E. in a way she can understand and also knew more about the various small problems that Auntie K.E. had in her daily usage of the smartphone. I am also grateful for Patricia’s help in coordinating the whole event and getting us on track with our plans and the lessons. I gained valuable memories and experience from this project and I really enjoyed the process.
