We Are Masters of Our Emotions: Rule over but not overruled!
“To create a better life, we must get rid of negative feelings.” “Whenever I am under the weather, I watch Netflix and things get better eventually.” These are some perceptions that we have towards emotional regulation before attending the webinar.
Through the webinar, we learnt that every emotion has its purpose: some serve as our protective mechanism in response to the environment, others serve as means of communication and relating to others. We should have control of our emotions and be able to mitigate them, especially when they are strong. Moreover, we should adopt methods that can help us better address the problem. It includes the practice of breathing/relaxing techniques and talking to a friend or family member. These approaches allow us to take a break from the situation and view the situation from different perspectives.
Additionally, we learnt about strategies to managing the emotions of others. Observing body language, maintaining a non-judgmental attitude and using reflective statements are crucial steps in building trust with the person and assisting the person in seeking alternative perspectives. These strategies will come in handy when our volunteers engage with seniors during Home Refresh and befriending sessions.
Here are some takeaways from our participants:
The webinar has provided us with strategies to understand our emotions and manage ours and others’ emotions. Don’t forget: “Rule over but not overruled!”
